Ventilator impeller:
most important design steps


1. Calculation of main dimensions

  • Specification of flow rate, pressure difference, number of revolutions, density of fluid and pre-swirl
  • Calculation of initial values for characteristic quantities: diameter coefficient, hydraulic efficiency, volumetric efficiency, pressure coefficient, number of blades, meridional deceleration, flow angles etc.
  • Calculation of main dimensions of the impeller: hub, suction diameter and impeller diameter, inlet and outlet width

2. Definition of meridional contour

  • Interactive definition of hub and shroud by straight lines+arcs or Bezier splines or user-defined polylines
  • Positioning and design of leading edge
  • Display of value and position of maximum curvature, static moment, progression of cross section area (circles)

3. Blade properties

  • Definition of basic blade shape: Simple 2D (prismatic or circular) or 3D free form
  • Calculation of blade angles on leading and trailing edge
  • Consideration of contraction of flow channel by blades
  • Estimation of decreased output by PFLEIDERER's or WIESNER's theory
  • Display of velocity triangles
  • Display of velocity components and flow angles

5. Blade mean lines

  • Calculation of circular blades or interactive definition of mean lines using Bezier splines or user-defined polylines
  • Display of blade angle (Beta) progression
  • Display in frontal view

6. Blade profiles

  • Specification of blade thickness on the mean lines
  • Display in frontal view

7. Leading edges

  • Simple leading edges or rounding leading edges by Bezier splines
  • Display in frontal view

8. 3D-view, Export

  • 3D view as solid or wire frame
  • Rotate, translate, zoom, color configuration possible
  • Data export of geometry data to several CAE formats: IGES, DXF, Unigraphics, PRO/Engineer Wildfire, SolidWorks, Catia V5, AutoCAD, Autodesk Inventor, One Space Designer, ANSYS ICEM-CFD, ANSYS BladeGen, ANSYS TurboGrid, AutoGrid (Numeca), Gridgen, Gambit (Fluent), text file
